Welcome to Week 2. This week we are focusing on advanced formula techniques, that we need to know, so we can perform more complex and advanced tasks in Excel. Alex is helping an online retailer to implement more specialized Excel formulas, to improve their workflows. Using structured references in tables, and array formulas, to perform complex calculations, Alex will create efficient and advanced solutions for them that work. The techniques we are discussing this week will become a critical addition to your skill set as an advanced user of Excel, so let's get started. Once we move into the more advanced uses of Excel, we are often required to perform complex calculations on large sets of data. Excel can of course help us with this process. Through using functions, tables, and name ranges in our spreadsheets, we can streamline our workflows and build better workbooks. Array formulas, which we are introducing this week, allow us to perform multiple calculations in one formula. An important aspect as you are developing your advanced skills in Excel. The benefits of using array formulas, is that you add an element of consistency, as well as safety, into your workbooks. They cannot easily be altered. The other advantage is that they help to keep file sizes down, which is a key element when working with big data sets and many calculations. The online retailer that Alex is working with is set to expand their business. They are keen to set up good work flows in their spreadsheet now, so that they can scale up their operations in the near future. Alex is going to tweak their workbooks in a number of ways. In particular, he needs to make sure that as new data is added, that the calculations he sets up stay current. Some of the issues he's tackling this week, we would have had to create workarounds for in the the previous courses. More advanced techniques, like array formulas, allow us to develop elegant solutions and that's what we will be doing this week. As Alex is working through his list of tasks, you will learn how to work with structured references and how to use functions to sort data. We will then introduce it to array formulas and how they work. And finally, we will discover how to solve problems with array functions. Advanced formula techniques can be daunting to some learners. Array formulas are incredibly powerful, and we will need them to conduct more advanced lookup functions in week five. Nicky will take you through these advanced topics, step by step. Make sure you download the Excel workbooks and work alongside us, and remember practice makes permanent. We have a practice challenge for you, to take your Excel skills even further. The toolbox, which you should be checking out every week. And, of course, this week's great tip. Now let's sit down with Nicky and work through this week in depth.
